I know that folks think Olivia Rodrigo is a copycat, but after listening to Sour about 10 times I have to say, this album is an inspired and heartfelt debut.
Music isn't about originality, that's a side-effect of capitalism. Music is about expression, emotion, invoking imagery and making you feel. By this measure Sour succeeds.
Every artist is inspired by other artists, all music sounds the same, we let the outdated concepts of ownership and monetization ruin everything.
Do some songs on Sour sound like other songs you've heard before? Sure. But they tell a different, heartbreaking and new story. The music serves that story. There is no sampling here, just interpretations and inspiration.
